OPA WIRE, Oct 20 (OPA) — Airbnb is rolling out a new weather protection insurance product designed to compensate travelers for rainy days during their holiday. The policy, underwritten by Chubb, allows guests to receive automatic payouts if rainfall exceeds specific thresholds at their destination. The initiative aims to mitigate the financial impact of weather-related travel disruptions.

Under the terms of the policy, travelers can receive daily payouts ranging from €50 to €1,000. To qualify, rainfall must reach at least 1.5 mm within a single hour between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. at the location of the rental. Justin Brouse, Airbnb’s director for strategic partnerships, AirCover and insurance, stated that the program is intended to provide value back to guests when weather interferes with their travel plans.

The service is currently available to residents of Austria, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Ireland, the Netherlands, Poland, Spain, and Sweden. The system utilizes automated monitoring from data sources including NASA, the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Because the monitoring is automated, guests are not required to submit manual claims or evidence of rainfall.

This coverage applies to both domestic and international trips, though availability remains limited to specific regions. The move places Airbnb in competition with specialized weather insurance providers like WeatherPromise, which has offered similar trip protection since 2022. As the travel industry continues to integrate climate-related financial products, Airbnb’s expansion into insurance marks a shift toward automated, data-driven consumer protections.
