Oregon School Shooter Identified as 16-Year-Old; Bystander Hailed for Stopping Attack

A 16-year-old gunman, identified by law enforcement as John Griffin Jr. III, carried out a deadly shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, on Thursday. The assailant, who was killed by a bystander at the scene, claimed the lives of three children and one teacher. The victims included children aged 5, 8, and 11, with one 5-year-old victim identified as Rhoam Summer. Two additional individuals, a 7-year-old child and a 54-year-old teacher, remain hospitalized in critical condition.

Police Chief Mike Krantz confirmed that the shooter gained entry to the facility by firing at locked doors. The attacker utilized a shotgun that had been purchased by his mother, according to sources briefed on the investigation. The bystander who intervened, identified by his family as Kaylub Giamanco, a local resident with children at the school, is being credited with preventing further loss of life. Giamanco’s family stated he is not seeking recognition but expressed gratitude for the community's support during this traumatic period.
